Can You Wear Mouthguards Or Sports Guards With Invisalign?

If you are interested in Invisalign treatment but also play contact sports, you are likely wondering how you’ll be able to wear your mouthguard during your training.

Invisalign is a type of clear aligner that gently moves the teeth into their most optimal position. They are a very popular treatment course to address a variety of issues such as:

  • Tooth aligned
  • Gaps between the teeth
  • Even certain bite issues

But for the treatment to be effective, patients need to wear the aligners for hours on end every single day, and only remove them for eating or to brush their teeth.

So can you get Invisalign treatment and also wear your sports guard? Find out the answer in this short blog post!

Invisalign and Mouthguards: You Can’t Wear Them at the Same Time

Invisalign needs to make direct contact with your teeth to shift them to a better position. At the same time, sports guards are also fitted quite close to the teeth in order to protect them from any potential blow to the mouth.

Because of how both of them work, you cannot wear them at the same time, but you can alternate between them.

You will need to wear the Invisalign aligners for at least 20-22 hours in order to follow the treatment, which gives you a little bit of room to switch to a mouthguard when necessary. If you do play contact sports, be sure to tell your orthodontist about wearing a sports guard throughout your Invisalign treatment and mention roughly for how long you typically wear one.

Once you get your aligners, all you’ll need to do is swap them for your sports guard before going on the field and put them back in once you’re done.

Will the Sports Guard Influence the Invisalign Treatment?

As long as you wear your Invisalign for at least 20 hours a day, the treatment itself should not be affected by the mouthguard.

Throughout your treatment, your teeth’s movement will be closely monitored by your orthodontist, and should any unwanted changes occur, they can correct the treatment if necessary.

It’s important to follow your orthodontist’s instructions as closely as possible to make sure your Invisalign treatment goes as planned. These instructions can include:

  • Only take out your aligners for eating, oral hygiene, and playing sports;
  • When taken out, put the aligners in their trays to prevent damage;
  • If you notice any additional tightness, call the orthodontist right away;
  • Use the special chewies to help your aligner fit appropriately on the teeth, etc.
