What Is Diastema? Explore Your Treatment Options

Have you ever wondering what causes the gaps between your teeth? This blog outlines what you need to know and what you can do about it.

What Is Diastema?

Diastema is the medical term for a gap between your teeth. While this gap is more common in the front teeth, it can happen anywhere in the mouth.

Diastema can be large or small and it’s usually only a cosmetic problem. If you are bothered by it and want to fix it, then you can opt for cosmetic dentistry, such as veneers or dental bonding.

In some instances, though, diastema can also be a symptom of gum disease, so it’s best to consult with your dentist on a treatment plan.

Diastema occurs in both children and adults. It may be more prevalent in children as their teeth are smaller, but the gaps usually get smaller as their adult teeth start coming in.

What Causes Diastema?

There are a few reasons why a person develops diastema, such as:

  • Genetics
  • Missing teeth
  • Undersized teeth
  • Oversized frenum
  • Pressing the tongue against the front teeth
  • Gum disease as the infection affects the jawbone, causing gaps between the teeth

Treatment Options for Diastema

If the gap between your teeth is not caused by gum disease, then you have quite a few cosmetic dentistry options to explore:

  • Dental Bonding: Your dentist will use a tooth-colored material, called composite resin, to close the gap between the teeth. The teeth are then polished and shaped into a natural form.
  • Dental Veneers: Veneers are custom-made, porcelain shells placed on the front surface of your teeth. They close the gap offering a very natural and uniform look.
  • Orthodontics: Braces or aligners will be recommended if the gap is too large or has been caused by misalignment. The orthodontic treatment will push the teeth to the correct position, closing the gaps.
  • Dental Implant: If you have a missing tooth, the gap will be closed with a dental implant that restores the entire tooth, including the root.
  • Dental Bridge: You can also opt for a dental bridge to restore missing teeth and treat diastema.

If your diastema is caused by gum disease, your dentist will diagnose it and create a treatment plan specific to your condition.
