Will I Ever Need to Replace My Veneers?

Veneers look perfect on paper. They are made from durable materials that don’t decay and are stain resistant. Does that mean veneers are invincible?

Not so fast. Here’s when and why you need to replace your veneers.

Yes, You Do Need to Replace Veneers!

Veneers are sturdy and resistant to staining and decay, but they do need to be replaced at some point. They’re not a permanent solution and have a limited lifespan. Even with great care, they can still wear down, break, chip, or get stained over time

That said, veneers can last for quite some years depending on the material they are made of and how well you care for them. Porcelain veneers, which are the most durable type, can last between 10 to 15 years, and sometimes even longer with proper care. Composite veneers, on the other hand, only last between 5 to 7 years.

If your veneers get damaged or worn out, you will need to replace them. The process is similar to getting them – Dr. Mark Ashy will remove the old veneers, prepare the teeth, and then bond the new veneers to your teeth.

Signs You Need to Replace Your Veneers

Here’s how to tell when it’s time to replace your veneers:

  • Cracks or Chips: Veneers can chip or crack, just like natural teeth. The risks of chipping and cracking are even higher if you tend to bite down on hard foods or items.
  • Discoloration or Stains: Veneers don’t stain like natural teeth, but over time they can lose their brightness and become discolored. The cement used to bond the veneers to your teeth can also discolor.
  • Decay Under the Veneer: While it’s true that veneers can’t get affected by bacteria, the tooth underneath can still decay if you don’t have good oral hygiene. If that happens, the dentist will need to remove the veneers, treat the decay, and then place a new set of veneers to restore your smile.
  • Detachment or Movement: If your veneers start to move, it’s often a sign that the bonding between the veneer and your tooth has weakened. You’ll need to get it reattached or replaced to prevent further issues.
  • Gum Recession: If your gums recede, the edge of the veneer can become exposed. This will not only affect the way your smile looks but also lead to other dental issues.
  • Wear and Tear: Veneers can wear down over time, just like natural teeth. If you notice that your veneers are worn or thin, it might be time to replace them.
  • Comfort and Fit: If your veneers no longer feel comfortable or right in your mouth, they may need adjustment or replacement.
