A knocked out (avulsed) tooth is one of the most serious dental emergencies you can experience, and taking the right steps after your injury will give you the best chance to save your tooth. So read on, and the team at Elite Dentistry will explain the 5 steps you need to take to save your tooth.

1. Recover Your Tooth, Clean It, And Rinse Out Your Mouth

First, grab your tooth. Do not touch the bottom (root), but only the top (crown). This ensures you do not damage the nerve and other delicate structures of the tooth. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it off with water. Be careful not to drop it.

You should also rinse out your mouth to eliminate any dirt, food particles, blood, and other contaminants.

2. Put The Tooth Back In The Socket Or In A Container Of Cold Milk

Once you’ve got your tooth and it’s clean, you can put it back into the original position in the socket to keep it moist. This is usually the best choice, assuming the tooth can slide easily back into the socket.

If you can’t get it back in or you don’t want to put the tooth back in the socket, the other option is a baggie or container of cold milk. This provides a moist environment that will keep the tooth alive until you can see the dentist.

3. Call Elite Dentistry ASAP – You Need Treatment Within 1-2 Hours

Ideally, your tooth needs to be splinted into place in less than 1 hour, though it may still be possible to save it after 2 hours. Longer than this, though, and it will almost certainly die.

So call Elite Dentistry right away, and tell our tea about the situation. Dr. Ashy will clear an appointment slot for you as soon as possible, and ensure you get the care you need in Orlando.

4. Control Bleeding And Come To Our Office Immediately

We know that you will be in pain, but you should not waste time trying to treat your discomfort on your own. A knocked-out tooth is among the most serious, time-sensitive dental emergencies, as mentioned.

However, you can go ahead and use a clean paper towel or piece of gauze to control bleeding as you drive or arrange transport to our office. Place it on the area and bite down to absorb and slow down the flow of blood.

5. Get Your Tooth Splinted Back Into Place At Elite Dentistry

Once you arrive at our office, you’ll get the care you need. Dr. Ashy will put your tooth back into place, then attach it to the nearby teeth with composite material or a special wire. This holds it in place as it heals. Depending on the situation, you may also need a root canal, but this is not always done in the same appointment.

With a little bit of luck and timely treatment, your tooth will re-attach to your gums. This may take several weeks, and you may need to schedule a few follow-ups at our office so that Dr. Ashy can check on your recovery.
